This is still happening for me,It happened lastnight.
I just updated my windows last night. It took 3 hours for some reason to update and restart. And even though i clicked update and restart, it did like this weird half assed factory reset. Where it deleted half my files. Applications, etc. All my pictures and video's and projects are completely gone from my computer.
I feel hopeless. I have no idea why this happened to me. Or how to fix it. Some super important stuff got deleted because i updated my windows.
Just upgraded to 10 AND THIS PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. Just lost 200GB of data. I hope whoever's responsible at M$ got castrated. And their kids. And their kid's kids.

it doesn't play dvds, it doesn't automatically rename files if there's one of the same name in the folder, and the poxy folders replicating themselves in explorer is infuriating. ms has made billions out of selling the same thing over and over and getting worse. ms sucks
But what if you need reinstall Windows?
The interesting thing is that it doesn't happen to some people and these people are who never talk about using windows, Linux or any other OS, they don't care who does what and they never answer to people who ask them what OS they use, it's like when people use windows phones and others tell them that windows phone is useless :S then when it comes to usability, the only thing they can do is playing some games on their non windows phones and they are happy about it, it's same with windows for PC's, for years, since I can remember this things happened and happen again, and people still continue using windows :S the point is, if something is bad, put it away, why trying to experience something bad over and over again ? PS, I got this update on my Pro version and had no problem at all with it ! and one really basic question, why should someone store non windows and app files on the drive where windows is located or inside windows document folder ?!
About 5 GB is gone from my C: disk after windows update yesterday! I know because, lucky me, I did a backup of C disk a couple of days ago and when I compare sizes between the C disk now and the backup files I can see 5 GB is missing. I've compared some folders and I can see that it seems to be random where files are missing, soem mp3's there and some installationfiles there, as an example. Irritating. From now on I will never same anything on the C disk.

I am still using Windows 7 and was finally thinking about taking the plunge and throwing Windows 10 on, thinking that after all these years, most of the problems have been ironed out. After watching this, I think I will stick with Windows 7. Linux is not an option as it is worse than Windows. It doesn't multitask very efficiently and the way it stores files and the paranoia about security on it drives me up the wall. So what will I do past 2020 when Windows 7 is scheduled to end? I don't know. I'll probably keep using it anyhow. Maybe build a Windows 95 machine. 😉
It is as if one of Microsoft programmers has planted a virus or a hidden glitch in Windows 10 Updates, perhaps as a kind of personal revenge! and he's been clever enough to baffle the whole company! I encountered the Windows-10-update-bug on Nov. 9th, 2018, to discover to my disappointment and surprise that users have been reporting it at least since 2017, yet Microsoft has not warned its users about it, nor has it disabled the update. The disaster happens so easily: you get a notification from Microsoft in the Action Centre about a required update and if you trust Microsoft and agree, that is it! After the restart you will be shocked: You would lose everything, and if you complain Microsoft would blame you for "manually" updating your system!! Never ever Microsoft accepts the existence of a huge bug or rather a virus in its update system; because it might cause liability! It is totally devastating. At best, your computer would be totally cleaned up as if you have reformatted and reinstalled a new Windows 10 with no trace of any of your programs, applications, setup, even your antivirus, browser, photos and months of works … Do not try to find the lost files in Windows.old! Most of them are gone forever! You have to reinstall every app and program-The bug would clean up nearly everything but the very basic … As horrible as that! …… As a glitch, it apparently shows up every now and then, during a major update, hitting certain users with no reason– Confusing enough for Microsoft to have no real solution for it!! Still, the QUESTION remains: WHY MICROSOFT HAS NOT WARNED ITS USERS BY A SIMPLE NOTIFICATION since 2017? WHY it has not eliminated the update altogether rather than trying to hush up the reports and following a cover-up policy????

I think if you are running the Retail version of Windows 10, Microsoft will not mess with your PC without your permission. That's why when you buy a PC, I recommend you purchase the license for the OS, that way the OS will be totally yours and Microsoft can't mess with it.

Friday, Oct. 26, 2018, as an Insider, I updated to build 18267 and right away when it was done, could not play any mp4 videos. I went back to build 18262 and disabled all updates for 35 days. What build are you referring to in this video?

Maybe I'm just being paranoid here, but the data loss bug deleted files that weren't synced to One Drive right? And One Drive is a Microsoft service right? So maybe this was an attempt of them to say "If you had used One Drive your files would have been safe" ie maybe they were trying to use scare tactics to push their other products? Yea it sounds paranoid but, then…………is it? Is it really??

Microsoft should get their power button pushed for this. vote with your wallets people there are alternatives that are definitely better than losing your files and if you think for one minute that that small number of people missing files is legitimate then you should update to Windows 10 and get it over with my suggestion is to buy it at least 32 gig flash drive before you do it and make a full-blown backup.
